Newfie Date Squares (Traditional Recipe)
Newfie date squares are a beloved Newfoundland dessert made with a soft, sweet date filling and a buttery oat crumb topping. They’re commonly served with tea and are a staple at family gatherings and community events.
Ingredients
Date Filling

2 cups chopped dates

1 cup water

½ cup brown sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla (optional)
Oat Crumb Base & Topping

1½ cups rolled oats

1½ cups all-purpose flour

1 cup brown sugar

1 teaspoon baking soda

½ teaspoon salt
-
¾ cup butter (cold or melted, depending on preference)
Instructions

Prepare the date filling

In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the chopped dates, water, and brown sugar.

Cook while stirring until the mixture thickens into a smooth paste (about 5–8 minutes).

Remove from heat and stir in vanilla if using. Set aside to cool slightly.

Make the crumb mixture

In a large bowl, mix oats, flour, brown sugar, baking soda, and salt.

Cut in the butter (or stir in melted butter) until the mixture is crumbly.

Assemble

Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).

Grease or line a 9×9-inch baking pan.

Press half of the crumb mixture firmly into the bottom of the pan.

Spread the date filling evenly over the base.

Sprinkle the remaining crumb mixture on top.

Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until golden brown on top.
